What is an “Uhuru” Youth Scholar?
Uhuru is a Kiswahili word that means freedom. Uhuru Youth Scholars are young people who use African knowledge systems to understand and interpret their current environment through action research.
What do you know about African knowledge systems?
Have you studied the principles of Ma’at? Do you know how the Dogon of Mali organized their thinking about the cosmos? How did Abyssinians come up with such a complex writing system? You may not know the answers to these questions. How could you? These ideas are not typically taught in schools? The truth is that your teachers probably don’t know much about African knowledge systems either. In the Uhuru Youth Scholars program we dig deep into the histories of African people to try to understand how they originated the creation and organization of knowledge. We then transform and apply these systems of knowing to our world today.
